Neuro-Oncology
Neuro-oncology is a multidisciplinary medical subspecialty dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, management, and supportive care of primary and metastatic tumors affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems, including the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It integrates expertise from neurology, oncology, neurosurgery, and related disciplines to address both neoplasms and the neurological complications arising directly or indirectly from nervous system and systemic malignancies.
Neuro-oncology primarily focuses on the care and management of life-threatening tumors affecting the nervous system, including both primary and metastatic cancers of the brain, spinal cord, and surrounding structures. These conditions include tumors such as astrocytomas, gliomas, glioblastoma multiforme, pontine gliomas, ependymomas, brain stem tumors, and central nervous system lymphoma, many of which have limited curative treatment options and require complex, long-term care.
The specialty also addresses neurological complications resulting from cancer or its treatment, including drug toxicities and paraneoplastic syndromes. Patients are often managed from the initial suspicion and diagnosis of disease through treatment, rehabilitation, survivorship, palliative care, and end-of-life support.
Nervous system cancers may develop as primary tumors originating within the central or peripheral nervous system, or as secondary/metastatic tumors that spread from cancers elsewhere in the body through metastasis, direct invasion, or compression. While primary tumors can affect individuals of any age, they frequently occur during adulthood and may vary in prevalence between males and females depending on tumor type.
Because of the complexity of these diseases, neuro-oncologic care requires a highly coordinated multidisciplinary approach involving neurosurgeons, neurologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, and supportive care teams working together to optimize patient outcomes and quality of life.
